Color & Function

When choosing paint colors, let’s first consider the function and intention of the room and the mood it needs to convey. Is it a bathroom that needs a calm, relaxing vibe or a cheerful child’s bedroom for playing and storytelling? The intention will help guide you towards a light or dark hue and it’s level of saturation. And always keep in mind that you want to choose paint colors that create the atmosphere you want in that space.

It doesn’t look like that on Pinterest!

We all love the endless scroll of ideas on Pinterest.  But when looking at paint colors, beware! What you see online is not always going to translate to your home.  Between the screen color, lighting and photo-editing, the color will definitely look different in real-life.  You need to really pay attention to the light and shadows in your room, as well as the time of day, as paint colors can look totally different from morning to night.

Color Surround

Color is also affected by its surroundings, so if you are refreshing walls and working with what you already have, pay attention to the larger furnishings in the room. For example, the cabinets in the bathroom or the bed in the child’s room. You can also take into consideration the accessories and/or art. Maybe you may be inspired to use one of the existing colors already displayed in the room.

Sample your colors

We know colors can change throughout the day. So the only way to be absolutely sure if your color will work is to create a sample board! Move it around the room, next to furniture, trim, windows, etc. This will help you see the best impression of the color. Make sure to take a look morning, afternoon and evening and with the lights on and off.
