Here at BANDD, we love a good open floor plan! Less walls allows for more natural light and a better overall flow. Although, having this much real estate to fill is sometimes a challenge, we have the solution: rugs!  Area rugs are the perfect addition to every room to tie the look together. They take up a large portion of the eye, and allow you to bring balance, color, and texture into a place. Here are some tips and tricks on how mix rugs:

Mixing Rugs With Different Textures

As difficult as this may seem, mixing rugs with different patterns and textures is actually a lot easier to pull off than matching rugs. This is a great way to add visual interest into your space. We recommend choosing rugs with a common color so they tie in together and feel effortless.

Playing Around With Different Scale

Choosing two rugs with different sized patterns can really bring a room together. Buy one rug with a large scale pattern, and go for a smaller print on your second rug, pick a common color and voila! A perfect match.

You can also play around with the scale of the rug itself. For example, mixing a rectangle area rug with a runner, round rug, or cow hide. I love how Caitlin Murray of Black Lacquer Design mixed this electric blue cow hide rug in this dining room to tie in with the living room sofa and subtle blue accents in the area rug.

Using The Same Rugs

This is the easiest way to go. If you’re purchasing one rug, might as well buy a second. Although this may seem a little boring, it’s a great way to bring your attention to something else, maybe a large art piece, or you just want the furniture to be the focus of the room.

Pick By Style

This is your chance to get a little wild! Maintaining a similar style allows you to vary your colors and patterns all while keeping a natural flow to your space.

Now remember, there’s no right or wrong answer to picking the perfect rugs. As long as there’s a common element and it brings the space a little more life, then you’re in the right direction.
