When it comes to designing a space, selecting the right furniture seems like the most important aspect – which is true in a sense. However, the finishing touches and little details play an essential role in creating a remarkable design. We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home since March with everything going on in the world right now, and I’m sure at some point you’ve been unhappy with how something in your home looks. If you’re wanting to freshen up your space but don’t want to break the bank by buying new furnishings, you’re in luck! Below we’ve listed some simple, yet powerful touches and details that can make a big impact.

Wallpaper

I know that wallpaper doesn’t seem like a ‘small’ detail in the grand scheme of interior design, but it can easily be overlooked and people often feel hesitant to incorporate it into their home. Nothing adds color, texture, and personality to a space quite like wall coverings do. Places that generally feel like they could use a little love and a more polished look, such as laundry rooms, mudrooms, and powder baths, can be completely transformed by adding in a wallpaper! Even if you don’t want to go all out with a bold, dramatic printed wallpaper, a textured solid color still has a much greater impact than an average wall paint.

Let There Be Light

Having the right amount of light is a key detail that has a huge impact on a room – making it feel more inviting and put together. Add in some sconces, pendants, or lamps to bring more light into those darker spaces in your home and open it up a little more.

Style Even The Most Ordinary Of Spaces

Did you really think we would be talking about small touches and details in design and not mention accessories!? Our advice is to style, style, style! Even if it’s in the most basic of spaces. Simply switching out your plastic soap bottle for a decorative dispenser, storing your toiletries or cooking essentials in cute jars, or adding in some organizers into drawers are all ways to make ordinary spaces look polished.

Window Treatments

The right window treatment can dramatically transform your space, making the whole room feel cohesive and tied together. Whether it be drapery or roman shades, window treatments are a perfect way to add some texture, layers, and color into a space! If you need some help with picking out the right type of window treatment for your window or how to properly hang drapery, check out this blog post that we posted a few weeks back.

Hardware

Although hardware seems like the smallest thing to worry about when designing a space, it can really make or break the look! Swap out those builders grade cabinet pulls for something more stylish for an easy makeover. You’ll be surprised at how much difference new hardware can make. Even if you buy a cheap dresser from a fast furniture store like Ikea or Target, you can jazz it up by adding some interesting knobs or handles on it.
